Black Comic Lords (BCL)

Friday Foster #1

Issue: Friday Foster #1

Year: 1972

Significance:

First Appearance of Friday Foster in a comic book. Friday Foster #1 also features the first African-American woman to debut as a lead titled comic book character.

Friday Foster was the first black woman to be featured in a syndicated newspaper comic strip.  Friday Foster started out as a newspaper comic strip syndicated by the Chicago Tribune Syndicate that lasted from 1970 to 1974.

Special Note: Some still credit Jackie Ormes’ “Torchy Brown” as the first because although it was NOT in syndication, the strip was distributed in several cities throughout the country aside from just Pittsburg.
