Black Comic Lords (BCL)

Picture News #6

Issue: Picture New #6

Year: 1945

Significance:

  • This book is regarded as the third comic book cover appearance of a non-stereotyped Black man.
  • Most importantly this book is the first “stand-alone” comic book cover of a non-stereotyped Black man.
  • Most importantly, this is the very first comic book cover appearance of a real-life Black celebrity, Joe Louis, who reigned as the world heavyweight boxing champion from 1937 to 1949.

Additional Info:

  • “Best Comics 1” (1939), the first appearance of the Red Mask and “The Challenger 2” (1945) are considered to be the only two (2) books that precedes “Picture News 6” in accomplishing this important milestone, although some would argue against “Best Comics 1” due to the character’s ambiguity.
